About Joan Yankauskas School of Dance
Joan Yankauskas of The Joan Yankauskas School of Dance
Joan Yankauskas Owner Director of the Joan Yankauskas School of Dance A dancer, teacher, choreographer and professional dancer

I began to study dance at age three. By the time I was five I knew what my profession was going to be, a dance teacher. I began assisting my teacher with classes at the age of thirteen. I was teaching my own classes by age sixteen. I began my professional dance career at age sixtesen as a Middle Eastern dancer called Tasjha. I performed in dinner clubs throughout Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New York. I performed on the television show Mixed Bag at age sixteen. I received my first dance training locally, then in New York. I trained with legendary dancers such as Luigi, Gus Giordano, Charles Kelley and Frank Hatchett. I have choreographed many High School Musicals and have done many charity performances. I opened my own dance school in 1970. My main objective is to teach and inspire my students, toddlers and adults alike, to love the art of dance. As owner and director of the school, I am involved with the instruction of every class. My classes are limited in size. I have assistant teachers in every class trained by myself, to ensure individual attention. In the many years of teaching dance I have seen my students grow into adults. Some drop by the studio now and again to say Hello and to catch up on what is happening in their lives. Some are now bringing their own children to my dance classes. Some have gone on to professional careers in dance, and some have become dance teachers with their own successful dance studios. I have been told by some that I was the one who inspired them to follow their dreams to become a dancer. I would say that one of the greatest gifts of becoming a dance teacher is to hear the inspiration and appreciation of your students.
